Using Nature as Inspiration in Printmaking

In this workshop, we’ll use the natural world as a starting point for creating a series of single-colour prints.

We’ll play around with carving techniques to explore texture, pattern, and depth: taking inspiration from things like bark, leaves, stones, and branches. You can go as abstract or as detailed as you like: zoom in on tiny details, step back and simplify shapes, or even invent your own forms based on what you see or remember.

We’ll kick things off with a short walk through Goethe Park to gather ideas and inspiration. Then we’ll head back to the studio to carve our designs into lino blocks and start printing.

Along the way, you’ll learn the full process: from developing and transferring your design, to carving, inking, and printing on the press. We’ll also look at simple registration techniques and how different papers can change the feel of your prints.

By the end, you’ll have a small series of prints inspired by a natural object of your choice to take home. Suitable for absolute beginners and improvers alike.
